Case Study: Walhampton

walhamptonAN INDEPENDENT day and boarding school for boys and girls aged 2-13, Walhampton lies in ancient woodland on the southern edge of the New Forest, on the coast near Lymington in Hampshire. With big vistas and broad horizons set within 100 acres of lawns, lakes and woodland, the school’s location is truly remarkable. Few prep schools can match Walhampton’s setting.

Our children achieve consistently impressive academic results, taking their learning to the next level as they prepare for the country’s leading senior schools. With small classes and outstanding teaching we prepare our boys and girls for 13+ Common Entrance and scholarships to senior independent schools including Winchester, Eton, St Swithun’s, Canford, Harrow, Radley and Bryanston. Academic standards at Walhampton are excellent and were strongly endorsed in our recent ISI report.

Our location and facilities enable us to offer a broad and dynamic curriculum that stretches beyond the four walls of a classroom. Lessons are taught in our kitchen garden, fields and woodland, bringing maths, English and science to life while making sure sports, music and the arts flourish alongside other academic disciplines. In how many other schools would you find the Battles of Trafalgar staged on a lake, or Hastings re-enacted with children in armour on horses?

As well as rigorous academic standards, Walhampton is passionate about breadth. It offers over 60 on-site extra-curricular activities including beekeeping, model railways, fishing, dance, archery, cookery, ceramics and shooting. There is a distinct ‘Swallows and Amazons’ spirit that burns brightly here. Sailing lessons take place on our lakes and horse riding is also popular, taught by our full-time riding instructors in our equestrian centre.

Full, weekly and flexi-boarders enjoy the relaxed and homely atmosphere of our boarding house, knowing that the care of the boarding parents, and the staff at large, is second to none.

Our Walhampton Express service provides a flexible boarding and train travel package that makes life much easier for London-based families. Our Sunday to Friday escorted service offers convenience and peace of mind for parents. In just under one hour and 30 minutes, children are only a train journey from an outstanding education within the ultimate country school setting. Both pupils and parents feel reassured that a real school and home-life balance can be achieved through flexible boarding at Walhampton. For many of our pupils, full-time and flexible boarding gives both children and their parents the option of enjoying all the school has to offer.

Parents and children are welcome at the school’s Open Mornings on 13th June 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It is an opportunity to meet Headmaster Titus Mills and enjoy an informal coffee with some of the Heads of Academic Departments in the Headmaster’s study. Our enthusiastic Year 8 pupils will be delighted to give all our visitors a full tour of the school and the grounds. Parents who are interested in flexi or full-time boarding will be given a tour of our boarding house. Head of Boarding Richard Cullum will be delighted to answer all questions, both big and small, about boarding at Walhampton.

Set in a historic and beautiful building, Walhampton is anything but formal or stuffy. You will find a school in a stunning location, with a distinctive ethos and tremendous spirit. A very warm welcome awaits you.
